Grantee UpdatesNRAO’s Ham Radio-Related Online Courses are Open for EnrollmentFunded by a grant from ARDC, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) has developed two no-cost, self-paced online courses on the SuperKnova platform that introduce amateur radio-related fundamental concepts. These courses were created in an effort to not only get learners licensed, but to also grow the amateur radio community, contributing to the hobby’s longevity. If you’re interested in becoming a ham, if you're already a ham and need a refresher, or if you’re simply interested in the fundamentals of the electromagnetic spectrum as it applies to your career, check out the below links to enroll in one of these courses: You can also learn more by checking out their recent press release: https://public.nrao.edu/news/unlock-the-secrets-of-the-invisible-radio-universe-with-superknova/. Grantee at the University of Leeds is HiringOur grantee at the University of Leeds is looking for a PhD student to join their research group. If you are interested in applying and have experience with machine learning, embedded systems, wireless communications, and the knowledge to earn a ham radio license in the UK, follow this link for application instructions. If you have any questions, please reach out to Professor Leandro Soares at L.SoaresIndrusiak@leeds.ac.uk. ARISS Contact at Historical IAU GAOn August 9, ARISS hosted a contact at the historical 2024 International Astronomical Union (IAU) General Assembly (GA) in Cape Town, South Africa, the first meeting to take place on the continent. At 11:55am UTC, students from Cape Town Schools made contact with astronaut Sunita Williams KD5PLB in front of an audience consisting of 1,000 students and astronomers, with VIPs from both NASA and ESA also present. You can catch the replay of the event by following the link here: https://www.youtube.com/live/7VsshsjvnTM. What ARDC Has Been Up ToFOSSY 2024FOSSY 2024, an annual conference that emphasizes the significance of free and open source software, occurred from August 1 - 4 in Portland, OR. On Sunday during the conference, Rosy KJ7RYV participated in the panel FOSS outside of corporations, where she spoke about the role of philanthropy in supporting open source work. If you were unable to attend the conference and are interested in catching a playback of this panel discussion or other talks, keep an eye on 2024.fossy.us, as they will be posting videos from the conference within the coming weeks. Huntsville HamfestThe Huntsville Hamfest happened from August 17 - 18 in Huntsville AL. Rebecca KO4KVG, GET member Ben Greve KO4KVH, and TAC member Dennis Mojado AD6DM attended. At the hamfest, we spoke with grantees from ARISS, the Signals museum, and the Von Braun Astronomical Society (VBAS): not only did we learn how grants helped these folks achieve their project goals, we also got some great insights and feedback on the grant application process from the grantee’s perspective. Finally, we’d like to give a huge thank you to Huntsville Hamfest Chairman Mark Brown N4BCD for his hospitality during the event!
