Grant: Space + Radio: Engaging and Youth in Amateur Radio via Kinesthetic Space Related Activities
Date: May 2022
Amount: $29,640
The Tooele County School District’s Community Learning Center (CLC) is home to the district’s capstone technical courses, including Linux, Computer Systems, Networking, and Engineering, Programming and Cybersecurity. It also houses the district’s alternative high school (Blue Peak High School), the adult education program, and the special needs transition program. The CLC serves a wide variety of high school students from diverse backgrounds and economic situations.
This grant will provide the funds for a program that will engage students and teach them about amateur radio via kinesthetic, real world activities and inspire lifelong participation in the hobby. As a capstone project, CLC students will build Linux-based radio tracking devices to launch via high altitude balloon (HAB) to the stratosphere. The project will impact approximately 900 students.
