Grant: Earth – Venus – Earth (EVE) Communications
Date: October 2024
Amount: $50,090
The Deep Space Exploration Society (DSES) is a nonprofit organization in Colorado focused on radio astronomy, amateur radio, and space science education. DSES operates the Paul Plishner Radio Astronomy and Space Sciences Center, featuring a 60 ft steerable parabolic radio telescope. Since its establishment, the organization has made several scientific advancements, including the successful measurement of galactic neutral hydrogen and the detection of its first pulsar. Utilizing Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology, DSES conducts various observations, such as studying galactic rotation, tracking multiple pulsars, and observing radio bursts from Jupiter. These initiatives not only contribute to scientific knowledge but also provide opportunities for STEM projects and education.
The Deep Space Exploration Society (DSES) EVE project aims to establish a two-way amateur radio communications link by bouncing the communications signals off the planet Venus. DSES will use the EVE project to collaborate with local high schools and colleges. Students will explore topics such as planetary movement, radio wave physics, digital communications, and engineering through research papers. The project aims to inspire students and encourage careers in space science.
