Grant: Microwave System Replacement
Grant Date: July 2021
Amount: $3,561
In response to the Federal Communications Commission’s reallocation of the 3.5 GHz frequency band, it has become necessary for Ski Country Amateur Radio Club in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, to completely reconstruct its microwave system using 5.8 GHz hardware.
Many newly licensed hams local to the Club first experience the hobby by using club-owned open access repeaters. The better these repeaters function with digital linking, the better the experience for new members and usefulness by all for emergency communications. Many Club members aspire to become part of the “repeater crew,” and this project provides an educational opportunity for them. Although the user interface will remain analog FM, the microwave and AllStar link systems are Internet Protocol (IP) and Linux based, thus an excellent learning opportunity for new technical support personnel.
