Illini Solar Car is an organization that enables University of Illinois students to gain practical, hands-on experience in several fields of study through the building and racing of solar-electric vehicles in international competitions governed by the International Solarcar Federation. The Illini Solar Car team from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus harnesses the skills of a diverse group of students studying both engineering and non-engineering fields in the pursuit of creating the world’s best solar-electric vehicle. Through interdisciplinary work that fosters real-world applications, the participants practice sustainable thinking by designing and building a road-legal car to compete in international competitions.

This grant will enable Illini Solar Car to purchase the equipment needed to test functionality of their gear on a test drive day. The gear will be used on the rental cars that the group uses during races. Communication activities are key, and all team members must have amateur radio licenses that are used to relay with other members of their team during the race.
