44Net Portal Ticket Party was a Success! In an effort to help eliminate our portal ticket backlog, ARDC held a Ticket Party on October 16, where folks from our 44Net community volunteered to join staff in closing portal tickets. In about 2.5 hours, we were able to significantly reduce the 996 open tickets we had at the beginning of the month to 316, most of which are awaiting information from users. We want to extend a major thank you to all of our volunteers who showed up to our Ticket Party, along with folks who attended our training session earlier in the month:
We couldn’t have done this without all of you! If any of you are interested in becoming a Ticket Handler, please reach out at contact@ardc.net, and we’ll be happy to give you information on next steps. Grantee UpdatesDeep Space Exploration Society (DSES) Open HouseImage credit: Bill Miller (KC0FHN) The Deep Space Exploration Society (DSES) held their 9th annual Open House on October 5. More than 100 attendees came out to the Paul Plishner Radio and Space Sciences Center near Haswell, CO to tour their site, which included the grand opening of their new operation center building, funded by a grant from ARDC. Not only did attendees get to see EME demos in the new building, they also got to tour their bunker to see demos of HF operation at their K0PRT club station. All in all, the Open House was a success, and DSES hopes they are able to inspire their audience to learn more about radio science! You can catch an overview of the event on the DSES YouTube channel, or read their report of the event here: https://dses.science/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/2024-Deep-Space-Exploration-Society-Open-House-Final-Report.pdf. ARRL Teachers Institute Grantee: Staten Island Technical High School Robotics TeamThe ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology, funded in part by a grant from ARDC and run by Steve Goodgame K5ATA, aims to equip and train teachers on wireless technology to use in their classrooms. Early last month, the Institute’s grantees from the Staten Island Technical High School Robotics Team were invited to have their robot throw the ceremonial first pitch at a Staten Island FerryHawks minor league baseball game. Immediately before the game, the group faced some last-minute hardware issues, along with a destroyed main servo wiring system. Utilizing simplex, the team worked together to get their robot back online to successfully deliver the first pitch! You can read more details about their experience, along with a video of the first pitch, by following this link: https://www.arrl.org/news/amateur-radio-and-robot-play-ball. Slippers2Sat Project Featured on Nepalese National TV ShowOn August 3, the Slippers2Sat (S2S) project, led by our grantees at Antarikchya Pratisthan Nepal (Space Foundation Nepal, APN), was featured on the Nepalese National TV show “Bigyan Prabidhi” (Science and Technology). The S2S Mentors discussed the motivation of the project and its potential impacts, and the Junior Team members shared their experiences of being a part of the team, the work they have done, and lessons that they’ve learned. What ARDC Has Been Up ToW3USR Station Dedication at the University of ScrantonOn October 25, grantees at the University of Scranton hosted a dedication of their newly built amateur radio club station W3USR. Rosy Schechter KJ7RYV and Board Member Ria Jairam N2RJ attended the event. Before the dedication, both Rosy and Ria attended open club night, where Ria demonstrated radio operation to a local student at the W3USR station. They also got to meet up with some of our grantees and other friends attending the event. A huge congratulations to Dr. Nathaniel Frissel and his students for achieving this significant milestone! To learn more about the W3USR dedication, check out the recent writeup from Scranton’s local news station WVIA: https://www.wvia.org/news/local/2024-10-28/new-space-university-of-scranton-amateur-radio-station-links-others-home-for-atmospheric-research. Pacificon 2024Pacificon 2024 happened from October 18 - October 20 in San Ramon, CA. Rosy Schechter KJ7RYV, Schuyler Erle N0GIS, Adam Lewis KC7GDY, and Tim Požar KC6GNJ attended, along with Board Member Phil Karn KA9Q, TAC member Dennis Mojado AD6DM, and GAC alumni Steve Stroh N8GNJ. We were able to speak with a few of our grantees, including Kay Savetz K6KJN from the Digital Library of Amateur Radio and Communications (DLARC) and Geoff Abreu K6ERA from the USS Hornet, and visitors to our booth were able to see a demo of our 44Net VPN service that’s currently in beta. Following the hamfest, members of our staff visited the USS Hornet, where they received a tour of the ship from our grantees from the Hornet Amateur Radio Club, where we got to see their latest upgrades, followed by the opportunity to make FT-8 QSOs from the ship’s hamshack! If you weren’t at Pacificon and would like to see a brief overview of our 44Net VPN demo, be sure to check out the Pacificon live stream from Ham Radio Crash Course (beginning at the ~3:19 mark). ARDC Team SpotlightLeandro Soares Indrusiak (G5LSI)Leandro has been on the Grants Advisory Committee (GAC) for three years, with his term coming to a close at the end of this year. He is currently a university professor, who helped create the University of York Wireless Society in 2022, and was also a former scout in Brazil who first experienced amateur radio during a Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA) event. With his background and knowledge in these areas, he cites his support with funding projects submitted by university radio clubs and scout groups as the work on the GAC that he is the most proud of. Outside of ARDC, Leandro is currently a Professor of Distributed Systems at the University of Leeds. On being a university professor and an amateur radio operator, Leandro states, “I always enjoyed environments where people can benefit from a diversity of cultures, knowledge, languages, and good universities are ones that can foster such an environment. Amateur radio is exactly the same, full of diversity, and that's what attracted me in the first place. The technical interests, which ended up directing me towards a career in Computer Science and Engineering, came later.” You can learn more about Leandro’s research by visiting his faculty bio: https://eps.leeds.ac.uk/computing/staff/14038/professor-leandro-soares-indrusiak-. Donni Katzovicz (W2BRU)Donni has been a member of the Conduct Review Committee (CRC) for almost a year. In being on this committee, he states “I enjoy the fact that as a whole, the community continues to do a great job of coming together. And on times where the community is not aligned, we can impartially help to make sure we’re all on the same page with our words and actions to continue to help build and grow the hobby.” Outside of ARDC, you can find him spending time with his two small children, either playing outside, making art, or slowly introducing them to the world of radio and electronics! For more information about Donni, you can check out his LinkedIn profile here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/donnikatzovicz.
